<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Between 1953 and 1954
three British built de Havilland Comet airliners broke up in the air due to a fatal
design flaw. All passengers died and the production of the British jet was
halted. This kind of multiple aircraft construction failures has not happened since
then due to vast improvements in technology and safety. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is therefore virtually impossible that two
brand new planes like the Ethiopian and Lion Air 737 Max 8 would crash in similar circumstances within
five months from each other. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">It should only take days
to see exactly what happened on board – the two black box recorders of the Ethiopian plane will not lie.
But in the meanwhile, there are other steps that should be urgently taken,
including to universally ground this aircraft type.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Of course, not all
in-flight control problems lead to crashes. For example, the Lion Air plane
involved in the crash in Indonesia in October 2018 experienced severe flight
control problems during its previous flight, but the pilots managed to land
safely. If it was not for the fact that the same plane crashed on its next leg,
we would never have known of the difficulties that the first flight experienced.
It is therefore crucial to check the log books of all 737 Max 8s and check
how many of these have experienced problems with their flight-control systems (MCAS)
during the past two years since they came into service. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If this kind of flight control difficulties
have cropped up with greater than normal frequency, there is clearly a huge
problem. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The FAA issued a damning
safety warning concerning erroneous inputs to the flight control system of
the Max 8 and their conclusion is self-evident and devastating for Boeing,
airline companies and frightening for passengers: “there is a potential for
repeated nose-down trim commands of the horizontal stabilizer (which) could
lead to excessive nose-down altitude, significant altitude loss, and possible
impact with terrain”.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">This brings us to the question: why are any 737 Max 8 aircraft still flying?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A recent article in the Canadian
newspaper, <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-changing-fortunes-of-african-aviation-ethiopian-airlines-soars-while/">The
Globe and Mail</a>, outlined the rise of Africa’s
biggest airline, Ethiopian Airlines,<a href="https://www.blogger.com/u/1/null" name="_Hlk532826417"> </a>and the tragic decline of its biggest
rival, South African Airways (SAA). </span></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The article suggested
that the fate of the two state-owned airlines has mirrored the contrasting
paths of the two countries - South Africa, the most advanced economy in Africa,
has slid into corruption and economic stagnation in recent years, while
Ethiopia has become one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">It
is worth noting that South Africa’s GDP is four times larger than that of Ethiopia:
$350 billion compared to $81billion.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">SAA’s seven consecutive
years of losses has added to its unsustainable debt levels and it only survives
on government bail-outs worth S$4.3 billion since the end of the Apartheid era.
Its top-heavy management, overstaffing and political interference have brought
the airline to the brink. In contrast, Ethiopian has grown by about 25% per year
over the past eight years and showed a $233 million net profit last year. The
difference between the two airlines is perhaps best illustrated by comparing their
fleets and staffing levels - SAA has 58 aircraft and 180 employees per
aircraft, while Ethiopian has 108 aircraft and 125 employees per aircraft. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over the past few years
SAA has reduced its network, gave up prime routes and landing spots such as the
invaluable direct Cape Town to London route. A large number of its pool of highly-trained
and experienced pilots are today flying for Ethiopian, Emirates, Qatar and
others, and it is not unusual (but quite comforting!), to hear the pilot speak
with a South African accent on any of these carriers. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">SAA is not the only
state-owned or parastatal entity in South Africa that is in serious trouble (Eskom,
SABC, Prasa and Sanral come to mind). However, as the national flag carrier with a previously
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>proud history going back to 1934, its
demise will be a huge financial shock and a tragedy, but it appears to be
inevitable. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

The Airbus A380 may be coming to the end of its production line, according to reports. Airbus is waiting for a key order from the largest user of this aircraft type, Emirates, but if this is not forthcoming, it would probably terminate production within four or five years. </div>

meatballs, mushroom soup and good Austrian white- and Italian red wine. Being in transit, I even had time for a shower and to send off some emails before boarding.<br />
<br />
The shower rooms were managed by a rather stern female staff member who insisted on minute details of my flight numbers, name, departure time, time of entering the cubicle and much more. The strangest part of the shower was that it switches off every 10 or 15 seconds - my guess is the genius who designed this unique and most absurd water-saving measure never had to use it him/herself. In addition, shower users are not allowed to sit on the little bench inside the shower room, just in case they are hoping to sit down while putting on socks, shoes and tying shoelaces.<o:p></o:p></div>

Arriving at the gate, we were held up for another 45 minutes due to the late arrival of our aircraft and had to wait inside a very crammed waiting area. I refused to enter this overcrowded circus, together with a few other wary passengers. We soon realized that it was much more convenient to wander around the terminal, go for a Starbucks coffee or browse the bookstore, than to fight with another 350 passengers for air and space in an overcrowded boarding area. This did not discourage the very persistent gate personnel from trying to entice us to enter the boarding area, using evil looks and often-repeated threats/announcements - something along the lines of "meinen damen und herren, ze plane will depart without you". I ignored them of course, and walked through the boarding gates when they finally began the boarding process. <o:p></o:p></div>

Champagne was served before take-off and lunch was adequate, but nothing more. Starters consisted of Venision, prawn and Mozzarella salads. I ordered the red "Austrian Blaufrankisch Hochberg Weingut Juliana Wieder", probably the longest name that I ever saw on a wine label. But it was really good, considering the vines were 25 years old and spent plenty of time in traditional oak casks. I decided upon the Salmon for my main course, but after I had a brief whiff of my neighbour's aromatic, roasted goose, I changed my selection and this was promptly agreed to by the air hostess.<br />

The aroma was better than the actual meal, insofar it was dry and tough. That was followed by a cheese platter, Port and coffee. We were offered a light snack before landing, together with some wine. </div>

I normally sleep poorly on planes, but I must admit that once my seat was transformed into an almost 2-m-long, fully flat bed, I had no problem falling asleep for an hour or two, in between watching a few movies. The seat adjusted relatively easily <i>once</i> you got the hang of it. Strangely, there are never any readily available instructions on how operate these rather complex seats or how to lift out the tricky seat table.<o:p></o:p></div>

The business class cabin on the main deck is configured in a 2-2 layout in the front<br />
half, while in the back half it is a 2-3-2 layout. Lufthansa's unfortunate decision to add a third seat in the middle row, has the potential to cause great discomfort for the poor unsuspecting middle passenger, considering he/she paid a business class fare.<br />

Lufthansa's business class was voted 10th best in the world in 2016 in the Skytrax World Airline Awards, with Qatar being at number one. Lufthansa was beaten by Air France (9th), but it edged out British Airways. To be frank, having flown BA, Air France, Lufthansa and Ethiopian business classes over the past few years (mostly through free upgrades), I would vote for Ethiopian as top choice among these four, as long as it is not on their very outdated Boeing 767s.<o:p></o:p></div>
